I'm walking 10,000 steps a day for Autism Initiatives

Hi all, my name is Ashley and I am mum to Finley, aged 7.

We as a family have been navigating life with autism since Finley was a year old.

It took us 3 years to get a diagnosis, followed by many soul destroying years of fighting the broken education system to get him a place in a specialist school where I am pleased to say, he now is absolutely thriving. I will never forget the journey we had to get a diagnosis and a suitable school place for him. I couldn't believe how hard it was to get the world to work for him. To make the minimal changes required to meet his needs. I know this is something I will spend the rest of my life fighting for. 

Living with autism is complex, its a challenge but I can also say it has opened my eyes to neurodivergence and made me a much better person for it. Finley has taught me so much, and inspires me to advocate for the many other children, like him who do not have a voice. 

Its the most rewarding job in the world being a SEN mum and I am immensely proud of our boy who surprises us every single day.

Having access to helpful resources, a community of people who get it, and specialist support is invaluable. This is why I am supporting Autism Initiatives Group. 

Walk for Autism is a fundraising challenge run by Autism Initiatives Group. Autism Initiatives Group is working towards a world where every autistic person has the support they need to thrive, every opportunity to fulfil their potential and a supportive, inclusive community to live in.

I'll be walking 10,000 steps a day from 26th March to 2nd April to raise money for this fantastic charity. Please sponsor me.

It’s the easter holidays, which being a working parent is hard enough to manage. By the time Finley was settled to bed it was past 8pm and I wasn’t even half way with my steps. Really proud of myself for getting up and out to hit the daily goal. 🎉💚

Was really lacking motivation today and had to force myself out on a big walk late this afternoon. Got there eventually 💪🏼

Day 4 complete, and although a lazy Sunday at home and out of the rain would have been ideal - there’s no way I could let anyone down after all the encouragement to complete the challenge 💚

It’s not been easy to hit the 10k today…. the sun disappeared… the rain made an appearance and the tiredness has been at a peak today. Really proud of myself for pushing through, which I couldn’t have done without such incredible support. Thank you 💚

I can't believe in just 3 days we absolutely smashed my £500 goal. Thank you so so much everyone for your incredible support. Feeling more motivated than ever for the walking challenge, and looking forward to a bake sale fundraiser next week with my colleagues to kick start day one of the 10,000 steps a day! 
So excited to see how much more we can raise.
