My journey :)

Sunday 1st Feb
As many of the people who know me already know, I was diagnosed with Autism 3 years ago.

Throughout my childhood, teenage years and early adult life, I knew I was different, I thought I was broken. Relationships didn't come easy to me, as people thought me weird, too direct and awkward. Communication was difficult and I never understood why how I communicated was wrong. I never understood why, when I spoke honestly people would often laugh. Sensory issues were confusing and overwhelming and I didn't know why.

The 2 years leading up to my diagnosis I researched autism extensively - not just the handful of lines you found on the NHS website, but more in depth criteria and what that truly looks like, in particular in women - since we present differently to autistic men. Suddenly my life was starting to click into place, and I was starting to understand some of my most significant life events that I'd always failed to understand.

Then came the dreaded imposter syndrome. What if I'm not actually autistic and there's just something wrong with me?

Eventually, I was diagnosed and I was overcome with emotions that I felt blind sighted by. I was angry at my family that had always told me I was autistic but had never followed up, I was disappointed by the school teachers that noted my autistic symptoms on reports sent to parents but not putting the pieces together. Angry that throughout my career I was disciplined for my autistic traits and had employers trying to mould me into something I'd never have been able to be. I mourned a life where I would possess more understanding of myself and how better to overcome my many barriers instead of wandering through life blind and feeling alone.

I sought support after my diagnosis through a charity that specialised in supporting neurodivergent adults that had been diagnosed as adults to better learn myself and coping strategies for my disability both inside of work and in my personal life. This charity was a lifeline for me and helped me navigate one of the most difficult periods of my life and has helped shape me into who I am today - someone who loves being myself and is more accepting of my difference, and surrounded by people who love me, for me.

Autism Initiatives group is working towards a world where every autistic person has the support they need to thrive, every opportunity to fulfil their potential and a supportive, inclusive community to live in.

I'll be walking 10,000 steps a day from 26th March to 2nd April to raise money for this fantastic charity, and I'd really appreciate any support in sponsoring me to help everyone else get the support they need too.
