Walking for AJ: Love Beyond Words
Friday 27th FebMy son AJ is 15 years old.
AJ is non-verbal and on the severe end of the autism spectrum. He also lives with severe ADHD, apraxia, and a global developmental delay. These are words people often read quickly and move past—but for our family, they shape every single day.
AJ does not communicate with words, but he communicates in other ways: through his eyes, his sounds, his routines, and the moments when he reaches out for comfort or connection. Understanding him takes patience, time, and love—and even then, it isn’t always easy.
Caring for AJ is hard work. There is no sugar-coating that. Some days are exhausting. Some nights are sleepless. There are moments filled with worry, fear, and uncertainty about what the future will hold for him. Simple things that many families take for granted—going out, being spontaneous, feeling understood—can feel impossible for us.
But AJ is also deeply loved.
He is part of our hearts in a way that words cannot fully explain. His presence has taught us resilience, compassion, and a different kind of strength. He has shown us that communication is more than speech, that progress looks different for every child, and that love does not need words to be real.
I am walking to raise £500 for the autism community because families like ours need support. We need understanding. We need services, resources, and acceptance—not just awareness. Autism doesn’t disappear when a child grows older. It follows them into adolescence and adulthood, and too often families are left to navigate that journey alone.
This walk is for AJ.
It’s for children who cannot speak but still deserve to be heard.
It’s for parents who are tired but keep going.
It’s for carers, siblings, and families who love fiercely, even on the hardest days.
