When the 'School Run' Became a Battlefield: Why I’m Walking
Monday 30th MarIve spent over 20 years both as a Youth Worker and a SEN classroom assistant, but I never truly understood the reality until neurodiversity arrived at my own front door.
Three years ago, my world changed. My youngest daughter who was aged 9 at the time, once a happy-go-lucky-kid began to disappear into a world of distress and shutdown. The "school run" wasn't just a challenge; it was a trauma. I watched her hang onto me, sobbing as if she were being abducted, physically unable to move toward the school’s front door. The lack of empathy and indeed support from various teachers and principals was astonishing.
For me, the shift from a professional to the parent was brutal (a single parent at that with little to no respite for myself), and I was forced to give up my job to manage morning meltdowns and protect my daughter’s mental health- as it took a gradual nose dive, in the worst possible way you can imagine, but that’s a different story all in itself; However, after around 18 months of heartache and total uncertainty, we are finally embracing our family life in a new way.
But the journey hasn’t stopped there! Between both my daughter’s experiences, I began to see the same AuADHD traits within myself!
I found myself down a "Rabbit Hole" and wanting to fight for better awareness. Living in Northern Ireland, I quickly discovered the staggering lack of services and support—not just for our children, but for adults navigating this path too. What started as a personal crisis has become a "hyper-focus" and a passion.
I am walking these 32,000 steps to acknowledge and highlight the injustices we face in a society and a system that isn't built for us.
With 10 Feet on the Ground, I’m hitting the paths and trials with my dogs Charlie and Luna, along with my own two feet to raise awareness for the families in NI who are still in the middle of that "heartache phase." We might have missed a few days due to "real life" and the Belfast rain, but we will make them up and will finish this walk strong and proud.
For us, the walk doesn't end after 8 days—the fight for support and understanding continues every single day.
So, thank you for supporting us. Every penny helps shine a light on neurodiversity in our community. Absolutely more awareness and training needs done for parents, teachers and workplaces… everywhere really! 🧩
