Walk for Autism is a fundraising challenge run by Autism Initiatives Group. Autism Initiatives Group is working towards a world where every autistic person has the support they need to thrive, every opportunity to fulfil their potential and a supportive, inclusive community to live in.
I'll be walking 10,000 steps a day from 26th March to 2nd April to raise money for this fantastic charity.
Backstory- on the 17/3/2023 our beautiful healthy Louis-Thomas entered the world screaming, Louis thrived rapidly for the first 9 months and begin hitting milestones as expected.
When Louis was 11months old he went to sleep one night & woke up a completely different baby. He was virtually mute & regressed right back to being a new born baby.
He couldn’t babble anymore, he refused eye contact, he stopped playing peak a boo and other baby games. He wouldn’t wave, give kisses or interact with anybody. He stopped taking foods completely. Our baby as we knew him disappeared overnight.
During the first few months of our new journey I hit some extremely dark days, I cried myself to sleep praying tomorrow would be the day he made a sound.
We faced, health visitors, portage workers, physiotherapist, speech therapist, paediatricians, dietitians. You name it we’ve hit them all head on. Weekly visits from different healthcare professionals, countless hospital appointments. Blood tests, zoom meetings. Feeding tube appointments. We were navigating through a storm we knew absolutely nothing about. We relied on advice & support from friends, people we’ve met along the way but most importantly our amazing families.
Louis now attends the most amazing nursery & we have all our support systems in one place and he’s bouncing his way towards his school journey with the biggest grin on his face. He’s learnt so much over the last few months & we couldn’t be prouder. He waves hello & goodbye. He claps his hands when he’s told he’s clever. He makes repetitive eye contact with his familiar adults & most importantly for me.. he interacts with everybody he feels comfortable around.
Now we are finally through the hardest times we’ve ever faced & life is settled I’d love to give something back.
