Albert Einstein and Autism

Sunday 29th Mar
Albert Einstein was never diagnosed with autism during his lifetime, as modern diagnostic criteria did not exist, but experts often speculate he may have been on the autism spectrum (specifically Asperger's syndrome) due to traits like social awkwardness, intense focus, speech delays as a child, and a preference for solitude.

Key Observations Regarding Einstein's Behavior:

Social & Communication Challenges: As a child, Einstein was a loner who often repeated sentences, a behavior that lasted until age seven. He was known for having difficulty with small talk and social interaction, preferring solitude or spending time with a few close friends.

Intense Focus & Special Interests: He exhibited hyper-focus, spending long periods in his study or on solitary activities like sailing, which is a trait seen in neurodivergent individuals.

Unique Cognitive Style: His ability to think "outside the box" and his reliance on visual, rather than verbal, thinking aligns with certain autism traits.

Alternative Theories: Some experts argue these behaviors could be attributed to high intelligence or suggest other neurodivergent conditions like ADHD, citing his disorganization and defiance of authority.

While some researchers, such as Professor Michael Fitzgerald, have suggested Einstein displayed many traits of Asperger's syndrome, it is impossible to confirm a diagnosis, leading many to consider his cognitive style a form of "high-functioning" neurodivergence.

Walking around Harrow today

Saturday 28th Mar
Harrow School provides a comprehensive support system for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) through its Learning Skills Department. While the school is an academically selective independent institution, it follows the national SEND Code of Practice as a model of good practice to ensure inclusive education

Autism Unique Strengths and Traits

Thursday 26th Mar
Intense Focus: Many autistic individuals possess the ability to hyperfocus on special interests, becoming experts in specific subjects.

Attention to Detail: Autistic brains often excel at noticing patterns and details that others miss.

High Empathy: Contrary to myths, many autistic people feel intense empathy, sometimes experiencing a physical reaction to another person’s pain.

Excellent Memory: A strong attention to detail often results in exceptional memory for specific facts or experiences.

Creative Thinking: Many show great talent in music, art, theater, or technical fields.

Communication

Wednesday 25th Mar

Autistic people may have different communication styles, skills and preferences to non-autistic people. They may use and understand words, tone of voice and body language, such as gesture and facial expressions, differently.

Some autistic people have intermittent, unreliable, limited or no speech. They may communicate in other ways, for example: in writing or sign language, through gesture or sounds, or by using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), such as picture cards and/or high-tech devices.

What is autism?

Wednesday 25th Mar

Autism influences how people experience and interact with the world. It is a lifelong neurodivergence and disability. Autistic people are different from each other, but for a diagnosis, they must share differences from non-autistic people in how they think, feel and communicate.

Being autistic means you may feel things and react to them differently from non-autistic people. You may find socialising confusing or tiring, and you may become overwhelmed in loud or busy places. You may have intense interests, prefer order and routine, and use repeated movements or actions to calm yourself or express joy. You might mask your discomfort to fit in, which can lead to mental illness.
