Walk for Autism is a fundraising challenge run by Autism Initiatives Group. Autism Initiatives Group is working towards a world where every autistic person has the support they need to thrive, every opportunity to fulfil their potential and a supportive, inclusive community to live in.

Walking for Oakley: Why This Means Everything to Me
There are some journeys in life you never expect to take—but when you do, they change you completely.
My son Oakley is 7 years old. He was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder at just 2 years old. At the time, he was non-verbal, and like so many parents in that position, I didn’t know what the future would look like for him—or for us as a family.
For years, communication was one of our biggest challenges. Watching your child want to express themselves but struggle to do so is something that’s hard to put into words. But last year, something incredible happened—Oakley began to find his voice. He can now communicate his basic wants and needs, and that has been life-changing for him and for us. Every word, every attempt, every small step forward feels like a huge victory.
But the reality is, daily life is still a challenge.
Oakley needs a lot of care and support. Things many people take for granted—routine changes, social situations, sensory experiences—can be overwhelming for him. He attends a special school where he is supported by amazing staff, and he has access to therapies that are helping him grow, develop, and navigate the world in his own way.
And through it all, he remains the most loving, beautiful little boy.
That’s why I’m doing this walk.
This isn’t just about steps or distance—it’s about raising awareness, understanding, and acceptance. It’s about shining a light on what life can really look like for families like ours. It’s about supporting charities that make a real difference—providing resources, therapies, and support networks that families rely on.
Most importantly, it’s for Oakley.
It’s for his future.
It’s for his voice.
It’s for every child like him who deserves to be understood, supported, and celebrated exactly as they are.
Every step I take is for him.

80,000 Steps Towards Understanding, Inclusion, and Acceptance

Wednesday 18th Mar
I’m taking on 80,000 steps for Walk for Autism because this cause is deeply personal to me. Autism isn’t something that fits neatly into a box—it’s a spectrum full of unique strengths, challenges, and perspectives that deserve to be understood, supported, and celebrated.
Every step I take is for greater awareness, but more importantly, for real inclusion. For a world where autistic individuals feel accepted exactly as they are. For better support for families who navigate systems that don’t always meet their needs. And for change that goes beyond words and turns into action.
This challenge isn’t just about distance—it’s about purpose. It’s about showing up, speaking out, and standing alongside a community that deserves to be seen, heard, and valued.
If my steps can help even in a small way to promote acceptance and understanding, then every single one is worth it.
