Why This Walk Means A lot to Me as the SEN-Co at a Play Centre

Thursday 29th Jan

Being a SENCo in a place that is safe, welcoming and fun means more to me than I can put into words. Every day, I get to work alongside children and families, making small but meaningful positive impacts  reassuring them that they are understood and supported.

Soft play centres can be incredibly busy and overwhelming environments, which is exactly why I run SEN sessions. These sessions give children the chance to enjoy themselves in a space that feels calmer, more predictable, and supportive. An environment where they can truly thrive.

This work is deeply personal to me. Growing up, I didn’t have access to this kind of support. I have lived with ADHD my whole life and, in adulthood, I now suspect I am autistic. In many school and play environments, I wasn’t supported in the way I needed to be. Instead, I was often unintentionally set up to fail because the environment didn’t meet my needs.

I often think about how different things could have been if I’d had someone who understood me when I was younger. Now, I have the opportunity to be that person for others. And if I can make a difference to even just one child, that means everything to me.

That is why I am taking part in the Walk for Autism. This walk represents inclusion and understanding not just for the children and families I support every day, but for the child I once was too. Every step I take is for those who deserve environments where they are supported, and able to be themselves.

Thank you for supporting me, this cause.
