My Brother Koen: Living With Autism and Teaching Us What Truly Matters
When people hear the word autism, they often think of challenges, labels, or limitations. But when I think of autism, I think of my brother, Koen.
Koen was diagnosed with autism when he was young. At the time, our family didn’t fully understand what that meant or what the future would look like. There were questions, worries, and moments of uncertainty. But over time, something became very clear: Koen was still Koen — the same unique, funny, thoughtful person we loved.
Growing up with Koen has taught me that autism is not just a diagnosis. It’s a different way of experiencing the world.
Koen notices things most people overlook. Small details, patterns, and routines that bring him comfort and structure. Sometimes the world can feel overwhelming for him — loud noises, unexpected changes, or crowded spaces can be a lot to process. But when he finds something he enjoys or feels safe doing, his focus and dedication are incredible.
One of the things I admire most about Koen is his honesty. He says what he means and means what he says. There’s no pretending, no hidden motives — just genuine truth. In a world where people often hide behind social masks, Koen reminds us how refreshing honesty can be.
Autism has brought challenges, yes. Communication can sometimes be difficult, and there have been moments when people didn’t understand him. But those moments have also taught our family patience, empathy, and the importance of acceptance.
Koen has helped us see the world differently.
He has shown us that success doesn’t look the same for everyone. That small victories — learning a new skill, handling a change in routine, or expressing a feeling — can be huge achievements worth celebrating.
Most importantly, Koen reminds us that people with autism are not defined by a diagnosis. They are individuals with personalities, strengths, interests, and dreams.
To me, Koen isn’t just “my brother with autism.”
He’s my brother who makes me laugh.
My brother who sees the world in a unique way.
My brother who has taught me more about patience, kindness, and understanding than any book ever could.
And for that, I’m incredibly grateful.
Autism is part of Koen’s story — but it’s not the whole story.
The whole story is about a brother who continues to teach our family what acceptance, resilience, and unconditional love truly mean.
I'll be walking 10,000 steps a day from 26th March to 2nd April to raise money for this fantastic charity. Please sponsor me.
