Why I’m walking for autism
A few years ago, I signed up for Walk for Autism at a time when I was slowly finding my feet again after a difficult period with my mental health. I’d just joined a walking group, my mobility was improving week by week, and this challenge felt like a quiet but meaningful way to mark how far I’d come.
Now I’m doing it again – for very similar reasons, but with even more appreciation for what walking represents to me: steadiness, resilience, and taking things one step at a time.
I’m also a mum to a wonderful autistic son. Being part of his life has opened my eyes in ways I never expected – to how differently people can see, feel and experience the world, and how much richness there is in those differences. That journey has also helped me understand myself better, including recognising that I’m more neuro-diverse than I once thought.
Over the years, I’ve been incredibly lucky to have a fantastic support network around me – through paediatrician appointments, SENCo meetings, and all the inevitable ups and downs that come with navigating systems that aren’t always easy for families. Not everyone is that fortunate.
So this fundraiser isn’t just about the walking. It’s about helping to support other families who are on similar paths – families who may need guidance, advocacy, understanding, or simply to feel less alone.
If you’re able to donate, I’m hugely grateful. And if you’re not in a position to, that’s completely okay too – sharing this page or supporting the cause in any way at all means just as much.
And if anyone fancies joining me for some of the walks along the way, you’d be more than welcome. Company is always good, and miles are easier when they’re shared.
Thank you for reading, supporting, and being kind 💙

Proud of you x
