Why Autism?
Thursday 26th FebWhen I was growing up, I was often seen as the “disruptive” child. Teachers would say that if I just tried harder or focused more, I would succeed. But no one really stopped to ask why I was struggling. I often felt misunderstood, left out, and unsupported at school.
Years later, my sister got married and had a baby boy. As he grew older, he was diagnosed with autism. When we found out, it brought up a lot of emotions for me. As I learned more about autism and watched my nephew grow, I started noticing similarities between his experiences and my own childhood.
Being involved in his life… helping with school pick-ups, spending time with him, and supporting him however I could..opened my eyes. Through researching autism and seeing how he was treated, I realized how little awareness and understanding there still is. Children with autism are often labeled as “naughty,” “difficult,” or “disruptive,” rather than being supported in the ways they truly need. There are still not enough resources or facilities for children and adults with special needs, and many grow up feeling isolated or out of place.
My nephew’s diagnosis also led me to explore my own challenges, and eventually I was diagnosed with ADHD. That journey helped me make sense of my childhood in a way I never could before.
This cause is incredibly close to my heart. I’ve seen firsthand how children with autism are misunderstood and overlooked. I want to help raise awareness, improve support systems, and create environments where children and adults with autism can live safer, happier lives and have workplaces that respect, understand, and value them for who they are.
