Autism journey

Friday 20th Mar
Joining Walk for Autism felt like one of those ā€œthis is important, but how do I even put it into words?ā€ moments… so here I am, trying anyway.

Autism, for me, isn’t just a word or a label — it’s a whole world. A world that I’m still learning every single day through my son. And honestly, no two days ever look the same. Some days feel like everything just clicks — routines run smoothly, communication flows, and I feel like I’ve got this parenting thing handled. Other days? Let’s just say if patience were a sport, I’d be training for the Olympics.

Autism comes in so many different shapes and forms. What works one day might not work the next, and what works for one child might be completely different for another. That’s something I’ve really learned — there’s no ā€œone size fits all,ā€ no perfect manual (trust me, I’ve looked). It’s a constant process of adapting, understanding, and sometimes just rolling with it and hoping for the best.

Being a mum to an autistic child can be challenging, I won’t sugarcoat it. There are moments that test me, moments that overwhelm me, and moments where I question if I’m doing enough or doing things right. But then there are the moments that remind me exactly why this journey is so special — the little wins that might seem small to others but feel huge to us. A new word, a new skill, a moment of connection… those are everything.

And the truth is, I wouldn’t change my son for the world. Not even a little bit. He’s taught me patience I didn’t know I had, strength I didn’t know I needed, and a completely different way of seeing the world. He notices things others miss, finds joy in places people overlook, and reminds me that progress doesn’t have to be fast to be meaningful.

Autism awareness is so important because it helps create understanding — and understanding creates acceptance. And trust me, a little more patience and kindness from the world can go a long way. Whether it’s a child having a meltdown in public, needing extra time, or doing things a bit differently — it’s not bad behaviour, it’s just a different way of experiencing life.

Also, quick reality check: if you ever see me in public negotiating with my child like I’m in a high-stakes business deal over snacks or leaving the park… just know I’m doing my best šŸ˜‚

Every day with autism is a learning curve. Some days are wins, some days are lessons, and some days are just about getting through — and that’s okay too. What matters is showing up, trying again, and celebrating the progress, no matter how small.

So this walk isn’t just about raising money — it’s about raising awareness, understanding, and support for families like mine. Because every child deserves to be understood, accepted, and celebrated exactly as they are.

And if there’s one thing I’ve learned on this journey, it’s this: different doesn’t mean less. It just means different — and different can be pretty amazing.
