I'm walking 10,000 steps a day for Autism Initiatives

Walk for Autism is a fundraising challenge run by Autism Initiatives Group. Autism Initiatives Group is working towards a world where every autistic person has the support they need to thrive, every opportunity to fulfil their potential and a supportive, inclusive community to live in.

I have challenged myself to walk 10000 steps a day for 28 days (23rd March-19th April) in aid of Autism initiatives.

I am walking for my son, family and friends

My son Jacob aged 8 started showing attributes of autism when it got difficult to get him to school or over the fresh hold from an early age he would fixate on one food or one school person and I just thought it was just something he would grow out of but it became more challenging when I had to keep going into school because of his behaviour and meltdowns in the morning. They finally got him extra support throughout the day and even got him a speech and language therapist. This  was where the journey for the both of us had began.

I am walking for the struggles,

I am walking for the break throughs,

I am walking for the future,

I am walking for those who need to know you are doing a great job.

Day 19 chorlton water park

Friday 10th Apr
Today was the first day of my long weekend after a hard 4 days at work.
I went to a local park that had good views but realised I would have to walk around about 3 times to get the steps needed for the day. I tried going on an adventure but got a little lost but found my way back to the car lol. I am one of them people who likes to people watch and listen to what is going on. There where many parents trying to get some peace by taking the kids to the park as it is half term but oh can they talk lol. Made me think of my boy he would have talked my ear off for the whole 1 hr 30 about ducks, about the water, birds and the dogs. It’s funny how their minds work and the questions they find to ask or the answers they already have.

Day 13 Salford Quay

Sunday 5th Apr
Me and my son had the great idea to walk around the Quay after going to the cinema. It was a good idea until we had walked 30 minutes and could not see away to get to the other side. We got a little stressed and just turned around but we found the car again. It had lovely views and a walk I will do again. He had fun on the walk pointing out all the different type of ducks and asking about the boats and buildings. There is never a dull moment with him by my side.

I walk for awareness.
I walk for the future.
I walk for inclusion.

Group day 8 - My day 11

Thursday 2nd Apr
World Autism Awareness Day

Today didn’t start very well, my son was overthinking that his friend school had half a day and his school was a full day and how it was an injustice to him as it is the last day at school before the Easter break. First obstacle was to get him in the shower and wash him but like the rest of us shower is thinking time so he got himself overwhelmed and started to shout and no longer wanted to be touched. I finally got him is his room to calm down after a little banging he stopped and did his breathing technique he has been taught at school. He finally got dressed and in the car then it all started again when he saw the school gates. Took me another 10 minutes but he was finally in the school.

After driving to work I was ready to start my steps walking around the shop floor, taking the stairs and talking to my work friends about what I am doing as I am walking around everywhere and having conversations about autism.

After work my son wanted to join me on my walk to gain my extra steps and he told me all about his day and it made me think of the good times we have together and the progress he has gone from having a meltdown everyday to only one in this school term and how far he has come with his writing and English work.

This is my motivation for this challenge to have a world where my son would be able to have all the opportunities all adults have and the carers who look after them have the communities they need for support.

We walk together for a better future

Group day 2

Friday 27th Mar
Today I made the choice of walking to and from school instead of the 5 minute drive. I had told my son what I was doing because normally any change can cause upset but he was happy, talked all the way home about his day or anything that came into his mind.

Today is football training day which left me with 1 hr to walk the block while my son was training. Listening to old school music having time to myself was nice.

Went to buy the bear for my guess the name bear, found a nice rabbit that looks huggable. 😁

First day

Tuesday 24th Mar
First day and was at work thought I would be able to get the full amount but came short of a few hundred. Today is looking better hopefully I get my first 10000 steps.
