Bittersweet Moments

Monday 2nd Feb
Nearly 5 years ago I got the news I had been waiting to hear, that my gorgeous boy had Autism.

A process that was so long and over time, you begin to doubt yourself, ‘Can they see what I can see?’.. We had numerous appointments, a hearing test, an eye test, we saw the paediatrician twice, the first appointment was the initial assessment where they did a string of tests on Cash, whilst reading through all the evidence that had been gathered and asking me questions. The second appointment was where the diagnosis came. A bittersweet moment, the words I had been waiting to hear, that they could see what I could see but the gut wrenching feeling of ‘What does our future hold?’

We got a double diagnosis that day, ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and Global Developmental Delay, which means Cash’s mental age is lower than his actual age. We were delighted that we finally had answers for our boy and that we could help him as best we could but the minute you get that diagnosis, all help that you are offered pre-diagnosis goes. You enter this ‘new’ world, it’s not new but it’s a post-diagnosis world and everything you thought is now a reality, and you enter it alone. Not in the sense of no-one is around you, of course you have friends and family that have been incredibly supportive to us throughout this journey, but the professionals that were once there, they go. Your fight to get your child what they deserve, becomes a ‘solo’ mission. Fighting to get your child an EHCP so there school journey is enjoyable and they get what they need and deserve, they don’t just get given out willy-nilly, they need to make sure your child is completely eligible. Fighting to get your child a disabled badge because they have no fear and are a danger near the roads.

It’s not been an easy journey but watching you navigate life in your world, your world that we all live in, has been an absolute pleasure and one of my greatest achievements. Thankyou for opening my eyes to this beautiful life with the most beautiful boy that I get to call mine 💙
