Surviving Autism and ADHD

Friday 13th Mar
As both a parent and a professional deeply involved in early years education, I have first-hand experience supporting children with additional needs — and I recognise the possibility that I may share some of these needs myself. This dual perspective has shaped my approach to advocacy, inclusion, and the pursuit of meaningful change within education.

My career spans roles as Deputy Manager at Beach Buddies Nursery, Early Years Practitioner at Kiddywinks, and Teaching Assistant at West Down School, as well as voluntary placements and leadership positions such as student representative, ambassador, and board member for The Learning Institute and WEST schools. I am actively engaged in projects like the Natural Schooling Project (funded by ERASMUS+), and serve as a Communication Champion for The Communication Trust and Mental Health Champion for Place2be.1

Throughout my work, I have implemented and assessed frameworks such as EYFS, ECM, ELM, and SEN, and have consistently advocated for children and families navigating the complexities of additional needs. My qualifications include a Level 5 degree in learning and education, Level 3 Children and Young People Workforce, and certifications in mental health, safeguarding, conflict management, and event planning.1

I have witnessed, time and again, how the education system struggles to adapt to the realities faced by children with diverse needs. Outdated policies and rigid structures often fail to provide the flexibility, understanding, and support that every child deserves. My experience is both personal and professional, this drives my belief that education must evolve: it should be inclusive, responsive, and built around the strengths and individuality of each learner.

I am committed to ongoing professional development, including training in British Sign Language, Makaton, and other languages, because I believe that removing barriers to communication is essential for a diverse and equitable society. My interests in mental health, additional needs, and holistic development inform my work, my advocacy, and my vision for a better, more inclusive education system
